“I wish I had invented blue jeans. They have expression, modesty, sex appeal, simplicity –all I hope for in my clothes.”Yves Saint Laurent
In theory, men and women have totally different reasons for wearing jeans.
Regardless of why you wear them, you know you’ve got a trusty go-to pair somewhere in your closet.
They go with anything and they’re comfortable!
(But there’s more to jeans than just making that booty look good).
Infact, jeans make the ultimate fashion statement.
Today we are going to talk about the one garment every bro has in his closet: Jeans.
Here’s a timeline on the evolution of jeans based on the Fame School of Style.
Jeans were popularized by Hollywood Industry Gents like James Dean and Elvis Presley.
1960’s to 70’s
Jeans were worn as a sign of rebellion by our rad friends: The Hippies.
- Brooke Shields sparked a jeans revolution with her Calvin Klein commercial.
- Birth of the ripped jeans.
Decline of jeans (thanks to Preppy folks and their Chinos and Khakis).
- Rise of Hip-Hop culture.
- Comeback of jeans.
- Era of Baggy Jeans.
2000’s to Present
Rise of stretchable jeans (skinny, super skinny, can’t breathe but my jeans look good skinny).
The Best Clothing Investment You'll Ever Make
Jeans are probably the humblest article of clothing around, yet they are the most multifaceted in terms of style.
Suits are associated with status and sophistication, jogging pants with athleticism or comfort, and shorts with a more laid back or casual setting.
But to quote YSL:
“modesty, sex, appeal, and simplicity?”
Yeah, the right pair of jeans embodies all three!
How to Pick the Perfect Pair of Jeans
More than just getting your size right, it’s about finding a pair that compliments your personality and lifestyle needs.
Think: comfort meets functionality.
Do you like your jeans tight?
Or are you a fan of the extra room? When you buy jeans, these are things you might want to take into consideration. Many brands will put their own twist on how jeans fit, but these are the most common styles you can find them in.
Regular Fit Jeans
Keeping it simple? This fit features the classic straight pant leg, with a little more room around your thighs and bum.
Relaxed Fit Jeans
A laid back cut for the laid back gent. This type of jeans is situated comfortably around your waist, loosens around the thigh, and is molded to fit your leg in its naturally relaxed state.
Loose Fit Jeans
This fit will have you hanging more loose than Hawaiians on Aloha Friday. This cut is known for comfortably sitting below your waist, giving the wearer maximum room to accommodate the legs, butt, and thighs.
Skinny Fit Jeans
For the contemporary guys out there: wear them loud, wear them proud. Skinny fit pants these days are usually combined with stretch technology to allow free movement, while hugging you from your waist to your ankle.
Slim Fit Jeans
This is the product of style meets comfort. A combination of skinny fit and straight fit jeans, these pants are narrower from the hip all the way down to the ankle, all the while providing you with enough room to move around comfortably.
Does It Complement Your Body Type?
In the world of fashion, men can look good in just about anything, including any type of denim jeans.
It’s important to remember that you can rock any pair of pants that you want regardless of your body type –that’s how style works 😉
But if you’re looking to buy a pair of jeans that will complement your physique, here are general guidelines you might want to remember.
Go down a size
The discomfort of a waistband that’s a bit tighter than usual pales in comparison to the oversized look you get when you wear one that’s too loose.
If you can put more than two fingers in the waistband, it’s too big.
- The fly
- Button down?
No thank you. They’re definitely different, but life is definitely easier with the good ol’ zipper.
- Button down?
- The pockets
- God bless denim companies. They deserve all the credit in the world for gifting our bottoms with garments that flatter our assets. But some companies go overboard with the branding (specifically on your butt pockets).
- Same goes for over-the-top embellishments.
- Bottomline when it comes to pockets: less is more.
- Take note of the size too: too large or too long = saggy butt.

Darker is smarter
Darker denims can be worn any time of the day, to any occasion.
Dress them up, drab them down, whatever floats your boat.
They’re probably the most versatile clothing you’ll ever own, so
if you’re looking to invest in a high end pair, go dark.
To wrap things up...
As you can see, unless an event is strictly cravate noir,
you can pretty much count on jeans to get you through just about anything.
We may come in all shapes and sizes,
but it’s not the jeans that make the man, but the man who rocks the jeans.
Until next time, stay fly my funk soul brother.
